HSHS Sacred Heart and St. Joseph’s hospitals receive ‘A’ Grades for Patient Safety

HSHS Sacred Heart and St. Joseph’s hospitals recently earned “A” grades from the Leapfrog Group for the hospitals’ commitment to keeping patients safe and meeting the highest safety standards in the U.S. The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit health care ratings organization that assigns letter grades of A, B, C, D and F to hospitals nationwide based on performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms.  The grades are considered the “gold standard” when it comes to safety comparisons among hospitals.  The ratings demonstrate a hospitals’ commitment to transparency and quality improvement.

“Receiving an ‘A’ grade from Leapfrog has been a goal of both of our ministries since public reporting began,” said Sacred Heart and St. Joseph’s hospitals’ Chief Physician Executive Dr. Erik Dickson. “It reiterates the commitment of all of our HSHS colleagues to strive for the highest quality and safety our patients expect and deserve.”

“We are blessed with the opportunity every day to take care of the community---mind, body and spirit. This is why we serve,” said Julie Manas, president and CEO, HSHS Division (Western Wisconsin).

“It takes consistent, unwavering dedication to patients to achieve the highest standards of patient safety. An ‘A’ Safety Grade recognizes hospitals for this accomplishment,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We congratulate the clinicians, Board, management and staff of Sacred Heart and St. Joseph’s hospitals for showing the country what it means to put patient safety first.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.
